Nigerian Banker Earns Fully Funded PhD Scholarship Worth Over $200,000 in the United States

Nigerian banker Oghenetega “Tega” Deborah Wash-Anigboro has won a fully funded PhD scholarship worth over $200,000 at Mississippi State University, where she will research cybersecurity and data analytics after emerging as the only African selected from more than 120 applicants worldwide.

Oghenetega “Tega” Deborah Wash-Anigboro, a Nigerian banking professional, has secured a fully funded PhD scholarship in Information Systems at Mississippi State University in the United States. The scholarship, valued at more than $200,000, covers her tuition and living expenses throughout the four-year doctoral programme.

Tega was one of only three candidates selected from more than 120 applicants worldwide and is the only African admitted into this year’s cohort. Her research will focus on cybersecurity and data analytics, with the aim of helping organisations make better use of data and strengthen their digital security systems.

Her interest in research grew from years of working in Nigeria’s banking sector, where she observed how poor use of data affected decision-making and increased organisational risks. She later worked in retail and supply chain management, where she continued to see the importance of data-driven decisions.

To prepare for a research career, Tega completed a dual Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Information Systems at Auburn University in Alabama. During her studies, she conducted research on artificial intelligence, optimisation, and business analytics, publishing peer-reviewed work that attracted academic recognition.

At Mississippi State University, she plans to investigate why many organisations invest heavily in data analytics and cybersecurity technologies but often struggle to use them effectively. Her research will explore how businesses can improve decision-making, encourage the adoption of digital tools, and maximise the value of their technological investments.

Tega’s journey from the banking industry to academic research highlights the impact of combining professional experience with higher education. Her achievement also serves as an inspiration to young Nigerians, especially women, who aspire to build careers in technology, research, and innovation.
