A teacher accused of flogging a student to death in Anambra State has surrendered to the police and will face investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
A 47-year-old teacher, Mrs. Ebere Dim, who is accused of flogging a student to death in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, has surrendered to the police after reportedly going into hiding following the incident.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect voluntarily reported at the Neni Divisional Police Station after sustained efforts by security personnel, community leaders, and other stakeholders to locate her.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred on July 16. Following the student’s death, officers from the Command’s Safe School Protection Squad, working alongside personnel from the Neni Divisional Police Station, intensified efforts to arrest the suspect while engaging with community leaders in Adazi-Ani.
Ikenga said the collaborative efforts encouraged the teacher to surrender herself to the authorities.
He confirmed that Mrs. Dim is now in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka, where detectives will complete investigations into the case.
The police assured the deceased student’s family and the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The command also urged residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and continue providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations and improve security across the state.
Ikenga commended the Adazi-Ani community, the traditional institution, and other stakeholders for their cooperation, noting that their support was instrumental in the suspect’s decision to surrender.
