UNIPORT Emerges The Overall Champion Of NUGA Games In Lagos

The University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) has emerged as the overall winner of the 26th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA)’s sporting activities.

The sporting activities were held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) from March 16 to 26, 2022.

Twenty-one games including football, volleyball, basketball, handball, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, hockey, cricket, chess, taekwondo, judo, swimming, Karate, strong man, beach volleyball, athletics, squash and boxing among others were competed for.

UNIPORT emerged overall best with 120 medals and went home with the trophy donated by Chairman of MultiChoice Nigeria and Odofin of Ikorodu Kingdom, High Chief Adewunmi Ogunsanya.

The host, UNILAG came second with 86 medals while Nile University, Abuja emerged third after garnering 38 medals.

All the winning schools were excited as they went forward to receive their trophies.

Benson Idahosa University, Edo State also won a trophy as the ‘Best Behaved University’ in recognition of their comportment during the activities.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, at the closing ceremony of NUGA 2022, commended the performance of all the universities; saying Nigerian students are very good.

After putting off the torch, UNILAG handed over the flag to the NUGA President, Prof Stephen Hamafyelto, while he presented it to the University of Jos as the next host of NUGA 2024.

According to Hamafyelto, the competition was the biggest sporting event for university students in Nigeria.

He announced at the close of the event that talents recognised during the competition would be called upon to represent Nigeria at the World University Games in China in June this year. He urged them to continue to train.
