The Bauchi State government has closed 39 private colleges of education for operating without proper registration and infrastructure, giving others a six-month deadline to comply or face sanctions.

The Bauchi State government has shut down 39 private colleges of education due to their failure to register with the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and the lack of adequate infrastructure.
Lydia Tsammani, the Commissioner for Higher Education, announced the closures during a news conference in Bauchi on Thursday. She explained that the affected institutions were operating without approval, often using primary schools as makeshift campuses after school hours and employing unqualified teachers, including primary and secondary school staff.
Mrs. Tsammani emphasized that colleges with unregistered but approved structures were given a six-month ultimatum to complete their registration or face sanctions. She also noted that 12 colleges with NCCE approval would be allowed to continue only if they employed qualified staff, paid their registration fees, and upgraded their facilities.
Additionally, she stressed the importance of admitting only qualified candidates, as some schools seemed more focused on collecting fees than maintaining educational standards. She highlighted that many of these institutions were still using outdated equipment, such as analogue typewriters, which is unacceptable in today’s digital age.
