The Abia State government has announced the introduction of free and compulsory education for all children in the state, regardless of their origin, starting in January 2025, covering Primary 1 through Junior Secondary School 3 in public schools.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, shared the policy after a State Executive Council meeting, emphasizing that parents and guardians who do not comply will face prosecution under the Abia Child’s Rights Law of 2006. He explained that this initiative aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s mission to ensure quality and affordable education for all children in Abia.
Additionally, Kanu confirmed the planned relocation of Abia State University’s Law Faculty from the Umuahia campus back to the main Uturu campus, a decision made in the public’s best interest. The state has also awarded contracts for nine new road rehabilitation projects across Abia, with specific details to be released soon.
Addressing other issues, the government will address the implementation of the new minimum wage, while the Commissioner for Works has been instructed to repair the deteriorating Osisioma flyover, a project completed by the previous administration but now requiring urgent attention.
The Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, assured that the widening cracks on the flyover currently pose no immediate danger.
