Nigerian engineer Husseinat Etti-Balogun earned a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering with honors at Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology through the prestigious UN/Japan Fellowship, after excelling in mechanical engineering at FUTA and contributing to global satellite research initiatives, and is now set to begin her PhD in space systems.

A brilliant Nigerian woman, Husseinat Etti-Balogun, has achieved remarkable academic success by earning a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering with honors from the prestigious Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) in Japan. She received this opportunity through the fully funded United Nations/Japan Long-term Fellowship Programme.
Husseinat began her academic journey at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria, where she graduated in 2023 with a Second Class Upper in Mechanical Engineering. During her time at FUTA, she developed a keen interest in space science and satellite technology, becoming an active member of the Space Club under the Centre for Space Research and Applications (CESRA).
She also served as a Microsoft Learn Student Ambassador (MLSA) and helped organize major tech events, including the Global Power Platform Bootcamp (GPPB) — the largest of its kind in West Africa.
Her involvement in space research extended beyond Nigeria. Through her collaboration with the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), Husseinat participated in global conferences, technical workshops, and international space-related presentations.
In recognition of her dedication, Husseinat was awarded the Post-graduate Study on Nano-Satellite Technologies (PNST) fellowship in 2023. This prestigious program, jointly administered by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), the Japanese Government, and Kyutech, selects only a few outstanding candidates from developing countries each year.
At Kyutech, Husseinat focused her research on CubeSat software systems and contributed to the BIRDS Satellite Initiative — an international open-source satellite project. Her work helped strengthen low-cost satellite systems used in education and space technology development across several nations.
Having completed her Master’s degree with honors, Husseinat is now set to begin a PhD program at Kyutech, where she will continue her research in space systems and nano-satellite engineering.
