After dropping out at 27 to raise her son, Nikki Sandoval returned to school and, despite losing him just before graduation, earned an honors associate degree at 52—turning decades of sacrifice, grief, and resilience into a powerful testament that it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.

Nikki Sandoval, a 52-year-old mother, inspired many by earning her Associate of General Studies degree with honors from Portland Community College, US. She overcame life’s challenges, including dropping out at 27 to give birth, and losing her son just before graduation.
Nikki’s journey began in 1995, but motherhood interrupted her education. She started and stopped college multiple times, prioritizing her son Michael. In 2011, she dropped out again to support his basketball team.
Tragedy struck one month pre-graduation: Michael passed away. Many advised postponing, but Nikki continued, honoring her son’s memory. She walked across the stage in tears, carrying pride and heartbreak.
Nikki completed 27 credits in two terms, securing her degree. Her hard work earned a full scholarship for a bachelor’s in education, plus employment as an educational assistant.
“It’s never too late to pursue dreams,” Nikki says. Her degree’s a tribute to her son, proving love, sacrifice, resilience, and determination pay off.
