Aggrieved Lady Reapplies For Her Job After Company Advertised Her Position With Pay N41.4m Higher

Cursory: A woman from New York, USA, has gone viral on social media after reapplying to get her current job. Her actions were as a response to her company for advertising her position with a pay raise of N41.4m. A tweet she made about the application has been viewed over 12.4 million times with more than 221k likes.

A woman from New York recently learned that the company she works for had advertised her position, so she reapplied. In a Twitter post, Kimberly Nguyen, 25, said she works as a UX writer and that her company is looking to hire another UX writer.

She found out about the development through a LinkedIn post by her company advertising the job, Daily Mail reports.

She got angry after learning that the new employee would earn between N14.7 million and N41.4 million higher than what she is currently paid for the same job.

Nguyen, who is also a poet, said her reapplication resulted in an emergency meeting among the leadership of her company.

She tweeted:

“My company just listed on LinkedIn a job posting for what I’m currently doing (so we’re hiring another UX writer) and now thanks to salary transparency laws, I see that they intend to pay this person $32k-$90k more than they currently pay me, so I applied.”

The tweet she made has gone viral and attracted outrage from members of the public who chastised the company.

She offers more explanations: “They’re saying it was an internal posting and wasn’t meant for anyone to apply to externally because public companies legally have to post jobs even if it’s an internal conversion…but that doesn’t solve the fact that someone internally is now still going to make $32k+ more???”

nd@FogboundT:As a corporate manager I can tell you best way to get a raise is to show them you have another offer. Majority of corpos will underpay you and sometimes your manager can try to go through hell to get you on more equitable pay zone and it will not work.

@Rob_ThaBuilder: I find it weird this idea that your employer is obligated to pay you as much as possible. It’s two competing parties trying to extract the most from their counterparty. It’s not their job to look after your interests in any salary negotiation just like it’s not your job to look after theirs. Don’t take it personal.They’re offering more because that’s what the market value for your position is. Which means you’re being underpaid. This gives you leverage. Ask them for a raise to what they’re willing to pay a new worker. If they say no, inform them you’ll be looking for a new job. They’ll almost certainly reconsider their position, and if not, then follow through and start applying for jobs at the higher salary.

@ODonnell1981: As a manager, anyone that says pay me more or I am leaving. We try. But if they say I have an offer somewhere else then 1 of 2 things happen.Option 1, we offer a raise to keep them for a few weeks while we start interviewing for their replacement.Option 2 we terminate then.

@mhoglund91: If you’re bringing the game to “I’m looking for a new position elsewhere “ you better already have an offer. A lot of managers would cut you loose for disloyalty, even if they could meet your salary request. Nobody wants to build a team of opportunists.
