The University of Maiduguri chapter of ASUU has firmly rejected the federal government’s decision to rename the institution after late President Muhammadu Buhari, calling it politically motivated and an affront to the university’s legacy and identity.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, has strongly opposed the federal government’s decision to rename the institution after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, the chapter chairman, described the renaming as politically driven and a clear affront to the identity, values, and academic legacy of the university.
The move was officially announced during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on July 17 in honor of the late Buhari. However, the announcement was met with swift criticism from the university community and the public.
In a formal statement, ASUU expressed outrage:
“This move is not only surprising but deeply offensive. It undermines the legacy of our university, especially as we approach its 50th anniversary under the globally respected name ‘UNIMAID.’”
“This decree has provoked strong rejection from across our community. ASUU, as a key stakeholder in Nigerian academia, will respond decisively, guided by facts and reason—not emotion.”
The union emphasized the need to uphold the university’s autonomy and maintain its long-established identity.
