Clinic Owner Arrested After Kogi Poly Student Dies During Botched Abortion

A 26-year-old Kogi State Polytechnic student died from excessive bleeding after a botched abortion at a private clinic in Lokoja, leading to the arrest of the clinic owner as police investigate.

A 26-year-old student of Kogi State Polytechnic has tragically died following a failed abortion at a private clinic in the Sarkin Noma area of Lokoja. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 26, when the student—whose identity has not been released—sought to terminate a six-month pregnancy.

Sources revealed that although the abortion procedure was completed, medical staff failed to stop the excessive bleeding that followed, leading to her death. Her body was later moved to the mortuary at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, by police personnel who visited the clinic.

The clinic’s owner has since been arrested and is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Lokoja as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic stated they were unaware of the incident, noting that students are currently on holiday. Director of Public Relations, Uredo Omale, confirmed the institution had not received any report related to the student’s death.

Efforts to contact the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
