Renowned American songwriter and gospel music legend Kirk Franklin has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music by Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Franklin was recognized for his profound influence on music and his notable community contributions. Additionally, he served as the commencement speaker for Morris Brown College’s 2024 graduation ceremony.
During his address, Franklin delivered a powerful message emphasizing resilience and faith. Morris Brown College President Dr. Kevin James commended Franklin’s speech for its impactful message on the significance of inner strength and the role of faith in overcoming life’s challenges.
Dr. James expressed his admiration for Franklin’s speech in an Instagram post, celebrating the graduates and highlighting the inspiration Franklin provided.
“Congratulations to these amazing graduates on all their accomplishments! This is a momentous occasion, made even more special by Kirk Franklin’s powerful commencement speech,” Dr. James stated.
“Dr. Franklin’s message about relying on your source during life’s challenges was truly inspiring. He underscored the importance of inner strength and faith in overcoming life’s obstacles,” he added.
Dr. James mentioned that the honorary degree was a gesture of gratitude for Franklin’s influence and dedication to inspiring others.
Franklin shared his achievement on Instagram, reflecting on the difficulties he faced due to his lack of formal education. He recounted how his mother, Gertrude, who had only a fourth-grade education, worked in cotton fields while he struggled with ADHD and feelings of abandonment. Despite these challenges, Franklin now views the world as his classroom and his faith as his guide.
He described his success as the culmination of three decades of work dedicated to Jesus, his mother Gertrude, his wife Tammy, his children, and those who brought him into the world but could not love him.
“I could share countless stories of embarrassment caused by my lack of education, which became the antagonist of my soul. Gertrude, my mother, had only a fourth-grade education, and I struggled through the system with ADHD and abandonment issues too extensive to write,” he said.
Franklin expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him, even when they did not fully understand him.
