A young Nigerian man earned a prestigious UK Commonwealth Scholarship and completed his master’s degree with an impressive 80% merit.

A talented Nigerian scholar, Rex Obiwuru, has achieved an exceptional academic milestone after completing his Master’s degree at the University of St Andrews, United Kingdom, with an impressive 80% (Merit). His study was fully funded through the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, funded jointly by the Commonwealth and UK universities, covers airfare, full tuition, a monthly stipend of £1,781, and additional study and clothing allowances.
Rex’s Academic Journey
Rex began his higher education in 2015, studying International Affairs at ESEP-LE BERGER University in the Republic of Benin. He graduated with First-Class Honours in 2019.
In 2021, he advanced to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, where he earned a Master’s degree in History and International Relations, finishing with Distinction in 2023.
Motivated by his interest in global development and security, he applied for the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship and secured full funding to study in the UK in 2024.
His Achievements at St Andrews
By 2025, Rex completed his second Master’s degree at the University of St Andrews, achieving a solid Merit (16/20, equivalent to 80%).
On LinkedIn, he reflected on the challenges he encountered:
“The journey wasn’t an easy one: harsh weather, a leap from History to Terrorism Studies, and moments of deep self-doubt. But every challenge refined me.”
During his program, he accomplished several notable milestones:
- Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV), where he deepened his skills in research, analysis, and peace mobilization.
- Dissertation Distinction (17/20, 85%), ranking among the department’s best.
- His dissertation explored how religious leaders help prevent violent radicalization in Northern Nigeria, based on 10 qualitative interviews.
- He received an exceptional four-page examiner’s report, praising his work as “excellent, extremely strong, and highlighting overlooked contexts.”
- He published one book chapter, and another portion of his dissertation was conditionally accepted by a Q1 journal.
Rex expressed heartfelt gratitude to his mentors, supervisors, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, and the University of St Andrews.
He ended with a message of encouragement:
“To someone out there: anything is possible. You can lose many things, but not your hope. Keep believing. I did it to show you that it is possible.”
