ASUU donates protective items to Anambra government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zonal branch, on Thursday donated some items to prevent spread of Coronavirus to Anambra government. It’s a preventative measures taken by ASUU in order to fight against the spread of Covid-19

Owerri Zonal branch of ASUU comprises academic staff of universities in Abia, Anambra and Imo states.

Prof. Steve Ufoaroh, Chairman of Nnamdi Azikiwe Chapter of the union, who handed over the materials to the government, said the gesture was a demonstration of ASUU’s solidarity in the fight against the dreaded virus.

The items donated included cartons of hand sanitiser, face mask and surgical gloves.

Ufoaroh, who led members of his executive and their counterparts from the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, said that the donation was in spite of the fact that some members of union in federal universities had not been paid for two months.

“This donation is part of our social responsibility as a union, we are on strike and salaries have not been paid for two months but we have to task ourselves to come up with these materials in support of the war against COVID-19.

“Our desire is to see that Anambra remains COVID-19 free, our scientists are already in the laboratories working on how to find a cure for the virus,” he said.

Receiving the items, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Secretary to Anambra government, thanked the university teachers for their gesture and assured them of judicious use of the materials.

Chukwulobelu, who received the donations along with Dr Vincent Okpala, the state Commissioner for Health, said ASUU had shown that it was not a militant trade union as people would think but one with human heart .

He sued for an amicable resolution of the ASUU-FG lockjam so that there would be sustainable stability in the Nigerian university system devoid of intermittent industrial crisis.

The SSG pledged that Anambra government would continue to work harmoniously with the state ASUU and pay their salaries regularly.

Earlier, the government team received similar donation from Anambra chapter of Pharmaceuticals Council of Nigeria (PCN).

Mr Patrick Obi, Chairman of PCN commended the Anambra government for its proactive approach which had kept Corona Virus out of the state.(NAN)
