Bauchi Varsity VC Refutes Allegation of Involving DSS to Hunt or Arrest Student

Professor Fatimah Tahir, Vice-Chancellor of Sa’adu Zungur University, has denied allegations of involving the DSS to target a non-student, Shehu Ahmed Buwayi, over a critical article, calling the claims false and defamatory while reaffirming the university’s commitment to free expression and academic integrity.

Professor Fatimah Tahir, Vice-Chancellor of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Gadau, has firmly denied claims that she engaged the Department of State Services (DSS) or any other security agency to pursue or arrest a student named Shehu Ahmed Buwayi.

In a statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, Professor Tahir described the allegations as “false, unfounded, and malicious.” The university emphasized that Shehu Ahmed Buwayi has never been a student at SAZU, and as such, cannot claim to be a victim of university action.

“The allegation is a deliberate attempt to discredit the university’s leadership and generate public sympathy through misinformation,” the statement read.

Professor Tahir, a respected academic and experienced administrator, reiterated her commitment to upholding citizens’ rights to free expression as enshrined in Section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution. However, the university stressed that this right does not permit defamation or incitement of hatred. According to Section 373 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, statements that harm another’s reputation may constitute criminal defamation and carry legal consequences.

The university’s response follows a publication by Sahara Reporters dated July 30, 2025, which cited the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD). The report accused Professor Tahir of using the DSS to intimidate Buwayi over a critical article he wrote.

SAZU categorically rejected the claims in the report titled, “Bauchi University VC Accused of Using DSS to Hunt Student Over ‘Critical’ Article.” The institution said the publication was misleading and unsupported by facts.

The university is demanding a full retraction of the allegations from Buwayi and called on CITAD to investigate the veracity of such claims before associating with them in future.

“Mr. Buwayi is not, and has never been, a student of this university. He has no standing to speak on its affairs,” the statement continued. “Those behind this smear campaign are harming not only the university leadership but the institution and the reputation of Bauchi State.”

SAZU concluded by reaffirming its dedication to academic excellence, transparency, and open dialogue. The university stated it will continue progressing under Professor Tahir’s leadership with the continued support of the Bauchi State government.
