One could say that this is even worse than releasing hard drugs into the society, because unlike most drug users the victims here did absolutely nothing wrong.

In Brazil, one of such criminal gang involved in selling counterfeit university diplomas and transcripts to individuals impersonating doctors has been dismantled, leading to the arrest of three individuals, including a doctor.

The gang members forged documents from various medical schools and sold them to the fake doctors. The counterfeit diplomas and transcripts closely resembled the authentic versions issued by universities, some even displaying the official logo of the State University of Bahia.

In June, Dr. Francisco Gomes, Valdelírio Barroso, and Reinaldo Santos were apprehended, while the alleged mastermind Ana Monteiro remains at large. To avoid detection, the suspects established a fraudulent email account using the State University of Bahia’s name.

They managed to acquire approximately 65 counterfeit documents from the Rio de Janeiro Regional Council of Medicine. An employee at the council became suspicious of one of the fraudulent records and promptly reported it to the Federal Police.

Registered nurse Cássia Santos, who spent a significant amount of money, approximately 400,000 reais (around $83,500), to obtain access to the documents, has been cooperating with the investigation.

Johnny Teixeira, one of the fake doctors, attended medical school in Paraguay but did not successfully complete his studies. He paid 80,000 Brazilian reais (about $16,700) to gain access to the counterfeit documents, as revealed by police records.

In February, he was arrested and detained for nine days for unlawfully working as a doctor. Another individual named Jean Machado, who posed as a doctor, threatened to report the fraud ring to the Federal Police unless they refunded the money he had paid for a fake diploma.

When questioned by the outlet, Machado denied purchasing a diploma and refused to disclose whether he had received any medical education.

Marcelo Salgueiro, a nursing practitioner and owner of an ambulance company, informed authorities that he paid 45,000 reais (approximately $9,400) to obtain a forged transcript and diploma bearing the State University of Bahia logo.

“The investigation was able to point out that there was indeed a business structure in this sale of fake diplomas and fake school transcripts,” Federal Police chief Francisco Guarani said.
