Meet Maths genius, who worked with IIT, NASA, then went missing, was found after years in…

Cursory: Vashishtha Narayan Singh, a math prodigy from Bihar, rose to academic heights but faced mental health challenges, altering his life part. Despite accolades from NASA, IIT, and Berkeley, schizophrenia affected his career, leading to periods of institutionalization. Honored posthumously with the Padma Shri, his brilliance and struggles mark a significant legacy in mathematics.

Vashishtha Narayan Singh, hailing from a small village in Bihar’s Basantpur district, led a life marked by extraordinary mathematical talent and heartbreaking tragedy. Born in 1942, he excelled academically, topping both his BSc and MSc exams in consecutive years. His brilliance in mathematics opened doors to collaborations with esteemed institutions like NASA, IIT, and Berkeley.

Despite his promising start, Vashishtha Narayan’s life took an unexpected turn due to mental illness, altering his trajectory from a potential successor to Ramanujan to a ‘could-have-been.’ Nevertheless, he gained global recognition for his mathematical insights, with some even suggesting that he challenged Albert Einstein’s renowned theories.

Starting his journey at Netarhat School in Jharkhand and later at Patna Science College, Vashishtha Narayan’s mathematical prowess earned him early promotions and a PhD by 1969. Acknowledging his brilliance, Prof John L Kelly facilitated his studies at the University of California, Berkeley. However, tragedy struck as schizophrenia afflicted him, leading to personal turmoil and a decline in academic recognition.

Despite his struggles, Vashishtha Narayan resurfaced in academia after treatment, teaching at prestigious institutions like IIT Kanpur and TIFR Mumbai. However, his battles with mental illness persisted, leading to periods of institutionalization and eventual disappearance.

With the help of public figures like Shatrughan Sinha, he received treatment and briefly resumed his academic career. Unfortunately, he couldn’t fully realize his potential and passed away at the age of 72 in 2019. Nonetheless, his contributions were honored posthumously with the Padma Shri award, recognizing his remarkable intellect and enduring legacy.
