Grace Paul-Okpara, a brilliant Nigerian student, had graduated as the best student from San Jose State University with a 3.98/4.00 GPA in Industrial Engineering and Mathematics, attributing her success to hard work, her parents’ influence, and effective study techniques.

Grace Paul-Okpara, a talented Nigerian woman, made headlines as the best graduating student at San Jose State University, California, after achieving a first-class degree in Industrial Engineering and Mathematics with a cumulative GPA of 3.98/4.00.
Grace’s interest in Industrial Engineering began in secondary school when she wanted to study a field different from the common engineering disciplines, opting for one that focused on system optimization with more mathematics and less physics.
In an interview with Tribune Nigeria, Grace shared that the shift from memorization-based learning in Nigeria to understanding-based exams in the U.S. was challenging, and she developed effective study techniques, scheduled reading time, and practiced extensively to adapt to the new system.
Grace also worked as a Peer Educator, which enhanced her academic performance but made her schedule hectic, teaching her the importance of taking breaks. She envisioned her achievement from the start, set her goal to excel academically, and worked diligently, with only two B grades in her entire course of study.
She attributed her success to her parents, who are scholars with doctoral degrees and who emphasized the importance of education, inspiring Grace and her siblings to excel academically.
Despite facing physical and mental challenges, including weight loss and stress, Grace stayed focused, often seeking support from her mother, friends, and prayer, realizing that her struggles were part of her journey toward achieving her goals.
Looking ahead, Grace plans to pursue a doctorate but first intends to apply for a master’s in Business Administration and an MSc in Industrial and Operations Engineering.
She encourages students to discover their strengths, work hard until they can work smart, remain focused and determined, and utilize available resources like tutoring, online videos, and peer support.
