Korede Elijah Adewunmi, the best graduating student at Obafemi Awolowo University with a 4.94 CGPA in Philosophy, overcame financial and health challenges to achieve excellence, aspiring to advance in ethics and inspire others through resilience and determination.

Korede Elijah Adewunmi, a remarkable Nigerian scholar, has emerged as the best graduating student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) with an outstanding 4.94/5.00 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in Philosophy.
Originally aspiring to study Law, Korede shifted to Philosophy after OAU’s law program was disaccredited in 2018. Inspired by interactions with senior members of the National Association of Philosophy Students (NAPS) and OAU’s esteemed Philosophy Department, he embraced his new path wholeheartedly.
Korede faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and recurring health issues, even working as a construction laborer at one point. With unwavering support from his parents and close friend Sherif Lawal, he overcame these obstacles through resilience and determination.
“Overcoming these challenges began in my mind. I stood up to my responsibilities and sought solutions,” Korede shared.
His academic journey was marked by a deep interest in ethics, including bioethics, environmental ethics, and the philosophy of mind. His final-year project, titled “The Problem of Other Minds and Cybercrimes,” earned a top score of 77% among over 90 submissions, reflecting his dedication and hard work.
Beyond academics, Korede served as General Secretary of NAPS, where he organized impactful programs addressing societal issues such as drug abuse. He was celebrated as one of over 200 OAU Stars for 2024, awarded a Certificate of Academic Excellence, and recognized by NAPS as the “Critical Thinker of the Year.”
Korede attributes his success to his parents’ sacrifices and his humble background, which fueled his drive for excellence. To manage stress, he prioritizes rest and listens to his body, ensuring he maintains productivity.
Looking ahead, Korede aspires to pursue advanced studies in Philosophy, focusing on ethics and related fields. His goal is to become a globally influential professor and entrepreneur, contributing to academia, policymaking, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Encouraging others, Korede advised students to:
• Set a positive mindset.
• Study smart and understand their learning style.
• Build a strong support system.
• Balance commitments and avoid distractions.
• Stay diligent and focused on their goals.
