Corps Member Criticizes Enugu State Government Over ₦892 NYSC Allowance

A corps member criticized the Enugu State government for paying a meager ₦892 as an NYSC allowance, sparking online discussions about poor state stipends for corps members.

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member has publicly criticized the Enugu State government for providing a monthly allowance of only ₦892. He expressed his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), questioning the rationale behind such a meager stipend.

In his post, he wrote: “How can a state like Enugu be paying ₦892 as NYSC state allowance to corps members… is it for what?”

The post quickly gained attention, with many others sharing similar experiences:

@marvtridon: “I guess you are in a town. When I served there in 2017, those in the town were getting this while those of us in the villages were getting N3,800. This means for 8 years, nothing has changed.”

@Davidspredict: “I like as those set of Enugu PR team dey ignore this post, despite they got tagged. Nice one.”

@_Sassy_Angiel: “This is no news; over 60% of Nigerian states don’t pay a dime. However, it’s better not paying anything than paying such a meager sum.”

@am1_Val: “Used to be 10k before 2015, mhen. E pain me as I receive 3,900 abi 3,700 during gburugburu time.”

@_youfoundalex: “They are now paying close to 1k 😂😂😂. When I served at the Ministry of Justice Enugu, we were not paid one Naira, yet them won use work finish us.”

@lol_stoned: “And I’m here complaining that Anambra is paying ₦8,100.”

@Etinosa007: “This is true; it was less than 1k for those serving in town, while those in the villages got 3,800 or thereabout.”

@kingsleyoko01: “Wahala just too much for this country… Which one be this again.”

@oyeks007: “So Enugu is still doing this rubbish. I served there and was even paid 1k in my PPA.”

@henry_abate: “It was 900-something before. I served in Enugu. I guess tax went up; that’s why it reduced to 892.”

It’s noteworthy that the Federal Government approved an increase in the NYSC monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, with payments expected to commence in February 2025. However, reports indicate that this increment has not yet been implemented, leading to continued dissatisfaction among corps members.

Additionally, state allowances for corps members vary significantly across Nigeria. For instance, Enugu State reportedly pays ₦3,800, while other states offer different amounts or, in some cases, no additional allowance at all.

The disparity between federal and state allowances, coupled with delays in implementing the approved federal increase, has heightened concerns among corps members regarding their welfare during the service year.
