Adekeye explained that the decision was made after careful consideration of various factors such as rising costs, competitive salary provision, compliance with regulations, and economic challenges.
“I am directed to inform you that after careful consideration and assessment of various factors such as the astronomical rise in the cost of goods and services, provision of competitive salaries and benefits, compliance efforts with government regulations and accreditation standards, and general economic downturns, the university management has decided to implement the following fees adjustments as approved by the University Governing Council, effective May 2024.”
Before the recent 35% tuition increase, students at were paying approximately N3 million per academic session. However, medical students faced even higher costs, with fees reaching as high as N5 million from the second year through the fourth year. By the fifth year, medical students were required to pay N9 million per academic session.
Regarding hostel fees, students previously paid between N800,000 and N1.2 million for a session. However, with the recent 100% increment, these fees have significantly risen to N1.6million and N2.4million.
Following the fee hike, some students have expressed their concerns by writing a letter to the Pro-Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs.
They requested a review of the fees, highlighting issues such as inadequate facilities despite the high costs. These include the lack of a steady water supply, clean toilets, and consistent electricity, adding to the students’ financial burden.
