Ijeoma Akunyili, the daughter of the late Professor Dora Akunyili, has been elected as a member of the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) Alumni Board.
She joins eight other new members from various countries. Ijeoma, who serves as the Chief Medical Officer of Jersey City Medical Center, an RWJ Barnabas Health facility in the United States, began her four-year term on July 1.
The official statement from Harvard Kennedy School highlights that the Alumni Board, consisting of 22 volunteer members, aims to strengthen connections among alumni globally. Currently, the board includes 16 elected members and six appointed members.
The board operates through several working committees focused on engagement, connections, celebration and recognition, governance, and communications.
Their mission is to champion HKS’s goals, increase alumni engagement, lead the Alumni Association, extend Alumni Relations Office programs, and advise the Dean on alumni perspectives. They work closely with the Alumni Relations Office and senior administrators at HKS.
Newly elected board members are expected to commit to a four-year term, attend biannual board meetings in Cambridge, MA at their own expense, and dedicate time to board work, averaging eight hours per month. Participation in working committees and other board initiatives, selection of winners for annual HKS Alumni Awards, and attendance at local HKS alumni events are also part of their duties.
Board members are encouraged to contribute to the HKS Fund, advocate for HKS, stay informed about school developments, recommend prospective students, share job opportunities for current students, and motivate talented alumni to run for the board in future elections.
