A senior lecturer at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Prof. Amechi Enyi, has responded to allegations linking him to the suicide of Miss Favour Ugwuka, a female student.
Miss Ugwuka, a final-year student in the Department of English and Literary Studies, took her own life on Wednesday night, May 22, 2024, after repeatedly failing a particular course.
In a viral voice note, the deceased claimed the lecturer continued to fail her despite her efforts during an additional year of study.
The student’s mother was also seen in a viral video blaming the lecturer for her daughter’s death.
Addressing journalists on Friday in Abakaliki, Prof. Enyi stated that the exam paper for the course (English Statistics) showed Miss Ugwuka had only copied down three questions. He argued that her death was unrelated to academic issues.
“I’m Prof. A.U. Enyi from the Department of English and Literary Studies at EBSU. It is unfortunate that the girl ended her life the way she did. I was shocked when I heard the news,” he said.
“It is not true that her death is related to an academic issue. I don’t see how someone who was not victimized and simply failed an exam would decide to take their own life. The first question should be whether she was victimized.
“And of course, she was not the only one who wrote the exam. Others may have failed too. So, it is not true that her death was due to this.”
Prof. Enyi recounted that he first learned about Miss Ugwuka in February 2024, after the second-semester results were approved and released by the school.
“Her mother called me one night accusing me of witch-hunting her daughter, questioning how she could pass all other courses but fail mine. When I tried to explain the procedure for addressing such concerns, she refused to listen, and I had to disconnect the call.
“I didn’t pursue it further because the university has a process for handling such matters. According to university rules, exams do not belong to the lecturer. We had submitted the results, the student scripts, the questions, and the marking scheme to the university, and these are all verifiable.
“If anyone feels aggrieved, there is a process for reviewing the papers. Threatening my life, saying she is from Nsukka and that I would be dealt with, is not the proper course of action.”
