Edo State Government has denied claims that public school teachers were ordered to perform menial tasks like cutting grass, stating such actions were voluntary and not officially directed, while launching an investigation and reaffirming its commitment to supporting teachers through ongoing reforms.

The Edo State Government has denied reports that public school teachers were ordered to carry out menial tasks like cutting grass and maintaining school grounds.
Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the state’s Commissioner for Education, issued a statement clarifying that no directive was ever given for teachers to engage in such work. He suggested that those involved might have done so voluntarily, possibly as part of community service.
Iyamu described the claims—reportedly made by a civil society group—as false, misleading, and damaging to the government’s education reforms.
“We strongly reject these unfounded reports. They are aimed at undermining our efforts to restore the dignity of the teaching profession in Edo State,” he said.
🔍 Investigation Underway
Iyamu confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the origin and truth behind the claims.
“We assure all our teachers that we will get to the bottom of this and correct any irregularities,” he stated.
🧑🏫 Teachers Must Focus on Teaching
The commissioner stressed that teachers should focus solely on their core responsibility—imparting knowledge—and warned against engaging them in duties that do not align with educational outcomes.
He also urged the public to remain cautious of narratives meant to discredit the ministry during its ongoing reforms, which aim to block exploitation and protect both educators and students.
✅ Support for Educators
Iyamu outlined recent steps taken by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to support teachers in the state:
- Increased minimum wage
- Full employment for casual teachers after three years
- Construction of teachers’ quarters
- Continuous training and retraining initiatives
“The Okpebholo-led government is committed to making Edo teachers proud of their profession and ensuring that every child receives a quality education,” he concluded.
