The EKEDC has explained why they disconnected power supply to UNILAG. They noted that it was due to over N1 billion of unpaid debts, despite recent partial payments and ongoing discussions, with several disconnection notices previously issued to the university.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) explained that it cut off power to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, despite the university’s payment of N180 million for July’s electricity bill, due to the institution’s recurring unpaid debts exceeding N1 billion.
UNILAG management urged the campus community to understand the ongoing power outage, noting that they were disconnected despite active discussions with EKEDC.
According to a statement by Babatunde Lasaki, EKEDC’s General Manager of Corporate Communications and Strategy, UNILAG was disconnected on August 27, 2024, after multiple unsuccessful negotiations over the outstanding debts.
Lasaki clarified that although UNILAG’s recent payment partially covered a fraction of its debt, the overall amount owed is still significant, totaling over N1 billion.
He added that several disconnection notices were issued to the university, and key staff members, including the Vice Chancellor and Directors of Works and Technical Department, were engaged multiple times by EKEDC officials.
The statement emphasized EKEDC’s commitment to reliable electricity service, contingent on timely bill payments and adherence to agreed terms.
Additionally, Lasaki explained that UNILAG’s move from Band B to Band A tariff followed due procedures, with adequate communication about the implications, reflecting the university’s average of 23 hours of power supply under Band A criteria.
