Ex-Achievers University Staff Member and Hundreds of Students Allegedly Involved in N457 Million School Fees Fraud

Achievers University uncovered an alleged N457.5 million school fees fraud involving a former bursary staff member, over 320 students, and several staff collaborators, leading to arrests and ongoing investigations.

A major financial scandal has emerged at Achievers University after the institution uncovered an alleged school fees fraud involving a former bursary employee, several staff members, and hundreds of students. The university said the fraudulent activities were discovered during an audit of students’ fee payments covering the 2023/2024, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

According to the institution, about 320 students allegedly paid their school fees into a private bank account controlled by a former employee instead of the university’s official account. The payments reportedly totaled over N457.5 million. University authorities explained that the suspect, who once studied Accounting at the school before later becoming a staff member in the bursary department, allegedly persuaded students to use her personal account by promising discounts and commission benefits.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, stated that the fraud scheme also involved manipulation of the university’s payment system. The institution claimed that despite the money not entering the university’s account, some students still received official financial clearance through unauthorized access to the payment portal. This allowed the affected students to continue academic activities without immediate detection of the missing funds.

Further investigations reportedly linked 11 staff members, 34 students, and another individual said to work at the Federal Medical Centre to the alleged operation. The university accused them of helping recruit students into the payment arrangement. Authorities said disciplinary measures would be taken against everyone found culpable, with affected students expected to appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee while implicated staff members would face the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee.

The institution also confirmed that the former employee had been arrested by the police as investigations continue into the full extent of the fraud. Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh reportedly verified the arrest and noted that authorities were still working to uncover additional details surrounding the case. The university added that the ongoing audit exercise would also review fee payments made by graduates from the last two academic sessions.

In a related development, Achievers University recently warned students against engaging in social vices and irresponsible use of social media. The school disclosed that several students had previously been expelled over misconduct, including fraud, drug abuse, and inappropriate online activities, while urging students to protect their future by behaving responsibly.
