Cursory: The Times Higher Education 2023 World University rankings include ten African universities, with the University of Cape Town leading. The rankings involve 1,799 universities and analyze over 121 million citations and survey responses from 40,000 scholars.


The 2023 World University rankings, published by The Times Higher Education, cover 104 countries and regions. Ten African universities have secured top positions in this year’s list.
The University of Cape Town leads as the top-ranked university in Africa, followed by Stellenbosch University and the University of Witwatersrand, occupying the second and third positions, respectively.
University of Ibadan comes seventh in Africa while the University of Lagos takes the ninth position.Globally, the University of Oxford tops the ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have seen shifts in their ranks.
Harvard University rises to the second position, displacing the University of Cambridge to third. The 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings encompass 1,799 universities, making it the most extensive and diverse university ranking to date.
This year’s assessment scrutinized over 121 million citations from more than 15.5 million research publications and incorporated survey feedback from 40,000 scholars worldwide.
