A remarkable Nigerian, Toroabasi Etim, has made history at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) by graduating with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering and achieving a record-breaking cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.82 — the highest in the university’s 30-year history.
Etim’s outstanding achievement also earned him the distinction of being the overall best graduating student for the Class of 2024. In a celebratory LinkedIn post, he expressed pride in this significant accomplishment, which he views as a testament to his dedication and future potential.
Reflecting on his five-year journey, Etim acknowledged the challenges and growth he experienced, giving thanks to God, his professors, and the friendships he forged along the way. During his valedictory speech, he conveyed gratitude for the support and guidance he received, which he credits as instrumental to his success.
In recognition of his achievements, Etim was honored with multiple awards, including Best Graduating Student in the Mechanical Engineering Department, Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty’s Best Undergraduate Thesis.
Throughout his academic career, Etim maintained an impressive record, achieving a perfect 5.0 grade point average in three separate semesters.
He was also awarded 15 merit-based scholarships from prominent organizations, including TotalEnergies, Seplat Energy Plc, Chevron, Oriental Energy Resources Limited, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), and the MTN Foundation.
In addition to his academic success, Etim contributed to the field through two published research papers and gained valuable industry experience with leading companies such as Shell and SETRACO Nigeria Ltd.
Reflecting on his university experience, he shared that it was more than just an education; it fueled his passion for engineering and shaped him personally.
