Exonerated at 19, Now a Graduate: Man Once Wrongly Sentenced to Death Earns University Degree

Wrongly sentenced to death at 19, Ryan Matthews overcame injustice and years on death row to earn a university degree, becoming a symbol of resilience, justice, and the power of education.

Ryan Matthews, a 39-year-old man from the United States who was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death at age 19, has overcome a life-altering injustice to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Applied Arts and Sciences from Texas Woman’s University.

His ordeal began at just 17, when he was arrested for a murder he did not commit. Despite the absence of physical evidence and a misidentification during the investigation, he was convicted by a jury and sentenced to death. Matthews spent five harrowing years on death row until new DNA evidence in 2004 proved his innocence, leading to his release.

Following his exoneration, Ryan faced significant challenges, including a lack of education, no job history, and family displacement due to Hurricane Katrina. Motivated by his sister Monique—who studied criminal justice to better understand his case—Ryan enrolled at Texas Woman’s University. While attending school during the day, he worked overnight shifts to support his family.

His perseverance paid off in 2019 when he earned his degree, fulfilling a promise to himself and those who fought for his freedom. Inspired by his journey, his mother has pursued a degree in social work, and his sister is now working on her doctorate. Ryan also plans to pursue an MBA to further his career and continue inspiring others.

His story stands as a powerful testament to resilience, the pursuit of justice, and the transformative power of education.
