The Federal Government plans to establish Federal Schools of Social Work in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to train professionals for social development challenges and enhance the sector’s infrastructure and capacity.

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish Federal Schools of Social Work in each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. This initiative, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), was disclosed by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, during the commissioning of a 100KVA transformer for the Federal School of Social Work in Emene, Enugu State.
Represented by the Ministry’s Director of General Services, the Minister highlighted that the Federal School of Social Work, established on March 15, 1983, aims to develop skilled professionals to address social development challenges. The institution’s curriculum is designed to train social work practitioners in areas such as Youth Work, Correctional Care Services, Sociology, Family Education, and Comparative Studies in Social Development, among others.
“The objectives include training serving officers, educating individuals interested in social work, enhancing the professional status of the field, and creating a platform for practitioners to exchange ideas through refresher courses,” the Minister noted.
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the school’s infrastructure, increasing student intake, and recruiting qualified academic staff. He assured that the Ministry is working to create a conducive learning environment to produce competent social workers capable of addressing contemporary societal challenges.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, represented by Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, commended the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs for providing the transformer, which will benefit both the school and the surrounding community.
The Acting Provost of the Federal School of Social Work, Mr. Chris Ajibola, expressed gratitude to the Ministry for the timely intervention, noting that the transformer will address a long-standing need of the institution.
The Minister urged attendees to promote the school and its activities, emphasizing the vital role social work plays in addressing societal issues both within and outside Nigeria.
