A final-year student of Government Science Technical College, Bukuru, Odey Emmanuel, has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Jos High Court for fatally stabbing his teacher after being disciplined for breaking school rules.

A High Court in Jos, Plateau State, has sentenced Odey Emmanuel, a final-year student of Government Science Technical College, Bukuru, to death by hanging for the murder of a teacher.
The court found Emmanuel guilty of culpable homicide, an offence punishable by death under Sections 188 and 189 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, 2017, in Charge No. PLD/J178C/2021.
Delivering the judgment, Justice S. J. Bakfur ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Representing the Plateau State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Philemon Audu Daffi, were Chief State Counsels Nanfe Mbap and Solomon Gyang Deme.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred on July 30, 2022, within the school premises during meal supervision. The victim, Mr. Job Dashe, was monitoring breakfast and lunch distribution when he confronted Emmanuel for collecting double food rations—a violation of school rules.
Eyewitnesses testified that Emmanuel reacted aggressively after being disciplined by Dashe and another staff member. Several prosecution witnesses—including teachers, law enforcement officers, and medical personnel—stated that Emmanuel issued threats before the attack, reportedly shouting: “I shall do it, nobody will stop me,” and “I must hurt this teacher,” while being encouraged by other students.
Moments later, Emmanuel pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Mr. Dashe in the chest.
Despite immediate efforts by staff to rush the teacher to Mercy Seat Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Following his arrest, Emmanuel was charged and tried. During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence: medical reports, eyewitness accounts, and police investigations all aligned with the timeline of events. The defense failed to counter the claims effectively.
In his ruling, Justice Bakfur highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime, the public setting, and the defendant’s clear intent. He condemned such violence within educational institutions and emphasized the need for strict accountability.
Emmanuel was convicted of culpable homicide and sentenced to death by hanging.
