A fire, caused by an electrical fault after power was restored, gutted student hostels at Nasarawa State University, destroying belongings and leaving many students with only the clothes they were wearing.

A devastating fire has razed student residential apartments at Angwan Lambu in Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, following a power restoration by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Thursday evening.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started when students noticed smoke coming from the roof, but with no immediate help available, the flames quickly spread. The Nasarawa State University fire service eventually arrived, but not before significant damage had been done.
Mr. Abashi Duniya Peter, head of the university’s fire service, attributed the fire to an electrical issue and urged students to switch off appliances when not in use and avoid sleeping while cooking. He stated that 45% of the building was destroyed, while firefighters managed to save the remaining 55%, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby houses.
One of the victims, Faith Akawu, recounted that an electrical spark from an extension cord ignited the fire, leaving them with nothing but the clothes they were wearing and their phones. The fire forced affected students to start over, as they lost all their belongings, including books and essential items.
