Five graduating students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have been honored with scholarship awards by the Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation. The recipients of these awards, recognized for their outstanding academic achievements, are:

Representing the foundation, Mr. Sunday Oyeniyi, General Manager of Risk Analyst Insurance Brokers Limited, highlighted that the awards are a way for the donor, Dr. Funmi Babington-Ashaye, to give back to society by supporting students. Dr. Babington-Ashaye, an alumna of the Department of Actuarial Science & Insurance at Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), felt it was fitting to extend her support to students in the same field at UNILAG and LASPOTECH.

Mr. Oyeniyi, along with Mrs. Esther Akinyemi, Head of Customer Service at Risk Analyst Insurance Brokers Limited, expressed gratitude to UNILAG for providing the platform for Dr. Babington-Ashaye to contribute to students’ success. The selection of awardees was based on academic excellence and financial need, which was determined through direct engagement with the students.

In response, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Prof. Bola Oboh, thanked the foundation for its continuous support. She encouraged the recipients to embrace the spirit of giving back and to uphold the values of UNILAG, the Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation, and the Actuarial Science/Insurance profession.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Halimat Bamigboye expressed gratitude to the foundation, stating that the award is not only a recognition of their hard work but also a motivation to continue striving for excellence.

The award presentation took place on Friday, August 16, 2024, with several university dignitaries in attendance, including the University Librarian, Prof. Yetunde Zaid; Acting Registrar, Mrs. Olakunle Makinde; Bursar, Mrs. Oluwafunmilola Adekunle; Director, Office of Advancement, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye; Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Dr. Samson Ogege, representing the Dean, Prof. A. A. Sulaimon; and other notable faculty members.

The Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation, established on October 22, 2015, aims to support students from humble backgrounds in achieving academic excellence. Each scholarship award is valued at one hundred thousand naira and is targeted at supporting high-performing 400-level students.
