Four law students of the University of Benin have been suspended for one academic year after they allegedly compelled a lecturer to apologize to the Student Union President at their faculty.

Four students from the University of Benin have been suspended for one academic year following an incident in which they allegedly compelled a lecturer to apologize to the Student Union President. The incident occurred on April 12, 2024, at the Faculty of Law.
A rustication letter dated July 1, 2024, confirmed the punishment for one of the students from the Department of Nursing Science, School of Basic Medical Sciences. This letter, seen by SaharaReporters, underscores the university’s stern stance on student misconduct.
The letter, signed by (Mrs.) C.I. Ehiglator, DR Senate Matters, for the Registrar, outlines the incident and subsequent disciplinary action. It states, “Senate, at its meeting held on Monday, 1st July, 2024, received and considered the report under reference. The Committee reported, among others, that you were rude and disrespectful to a Lecturer at the Faculty of Law on the morning of Friday, 12th April, 2024, by insisting that he should apologize to the Student Union President without finding out what transpired to cause the commotion; and your insistence on the apology aggravated the crisis.”
The letter further specifies that the Senate has approved the rustication of the involved students for one academic session, effective immediately. Upon resumption, the students are required to submit a sworn affidavit of undertaking to be of good behavior, supported by a letter from their parents, guardian, or sponsor, and obtain a formal letter of clearance from the Registrar, which must be applied for at least three months before the rustication period ends.
Failure to meet these conditions will hinder the students’ reinstatement into the university.
Additionally, on April 29, 2024, the university indefinitely suspended the Student Union Government following an attack on the Labour Party governorship candidate for the forthcoming Edo State election, Olumide Akpata.
