From Law Student to Comedy Sensation: Sabinus Shares How His Father Initially Opposed His Career Path

Sabinus shared that although his father initially rejected his passion for comedy in favor of a law career, he eventually accepted it after seeing his son succeed financially, highlighting the importance of supporting children’s natural talents.

Nigerian comedian Sabinus has revealed that his father only came to accept his career in comedy after he began earning a steady income from it. According to him, pursuing his passion wasn’t easy at the beginning, largely because of the disapproval he faced at home.

Speaking in an open conversation with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father had always envisioned him becoming a lawyer. Despite trying several times, he never managed to gain admission to study Law. Instead, he eventually secured a place at the University of Port Harcourt, where he studied Linguistics and Communication Studies.

It was during his university years that Sabinus discovered his talent for comedy and gradually started creating online skits. However, he kept this new pursuit hidden from his father throughout his time in school.

“After graduation, he still didn’t know I was doing comedy. I kept it from him,” Sabinus said. Things changed about a year later when his father began noticing his face on posters advertising comedy events. His sisters later confirmed to their father that Sabinus was actively performing.

This discovery did not sit well with his father. Sabinus recalled him reacting angrily: “He was upset. He said, ‘What kind of comedy? Nonsense job. I sent you to school to become a lawyer.’”

Over time, however, his father’s stance softened—especially when Sabinus began achieving financial independence through comedy. Eventually, he gave his full approval as his son’s career gained momentum.

The comedian’s experience underscores the importance of parents identifying and nurturing their children’s natural talents rather than imposing career paths on them. Many people today still struggle with dissatisfaction because they were steered away from their genuine interests and passions.
