From Secondary School Teacher To 1st Female Prime Minister of Uganda, Meet Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja

Uganda has named the country’s first woman prime minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja. Assuming office on the 21st of June 2021, Nabbanja was nominated by President Yoweri Museveni on the 8th of June and approved by parliament to work as prime minister for the next five years.


Only 25 years ago, Nabbanja was a school teacher at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Kakumiro. After serving as District Councillor in what was Kibaale District at the time, she proceeded to concurrently serve as the Secretary for Health, Gender and Community Services for the district. She, from 2001–2010 served as a Resident District Commissioner in the districts of Pallisa, Busia and Budaka.


In 2011, she was elected as Kibaale District Women Representative in the 9th Parliament (2011–2016). In 2016, she contested again for the Women Constituency and won. On 14 December 2019, Nabbanja was appointed State Minister of Health and today, She is the Prime Minister of the 82-member cabinet.

This makes her the 11th Prime Minister of Uganda and the first woman Prime Minister of same.

In her acceptance speech, Nabbanja said: “I thank God for what he has done for me. I thank fellow members of Parliament (MPs) for accepting me to become an MP without even debating on me.”
