FUOYE Begins Probe After Senior Lecturer was Accused of Sexually Harassing a Student

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti has formed a panel to investigate sexual harassment allegations against Dr. Anthony Agbegbedia, who is accused by a student of failing her after she rejected his advances, while the lecturer denies the claims and threatens legal action for defamation.

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) in Ekiti State has established a panel to look into sexual harassment allegations against Dr. Anthony Agbegbedia, a lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies. The university has also called the father of the student who made these accusations to meet with school officials.

This action comes after a report from SaharaReporters, where a final-year student claimed that Dr. Agbegbedia failed her academically after she rejected his advances. The student alleged ongoing harassment and manipulation of her academic results following her refusal of his inappropriate requests.

The student’s father stated that the panel was formed after the publication of the story by SaharaReporters.

He expressed his determination to pursue justice for his daughter, despite receiving threats of a lawsuit from the lecturer. He emphasized that he would not be intimidated and plans to take legal action.

Meanwhile, Dr. Agbegbedia’s lawyer reached out to the student’s father, suggesting a resolution to the matter.

The lawyer noted the importance of forgiveness and collaboration in resolving disputes, acknowledging that mistakes happen.

He proposed discussions to find a mutual solution, whether through in-person or virtual meetings.

In a letter addressed to the student’s father, Dr. Agbegbedia denied failing the student due to her rejection of his advances and demanded an immediate retraction of what he termed defamatory statements published online, along with a public apology.

He warned that failure to comply would lead him to pursue legal action for damages within a specified timeframe.
