FUTA Alumni Demand Urgent Action Over Graduate’s NYSC Mobilisation Denial

FUTA alumni have given JAMB a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the denial of NYSC mobilisation for graduate Jamiu Owodunni Basola, whose admission the university affirms was valid despite JAMB’s contrary claims.

The Council of Past Students’ Union Leaders from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has given the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the lingering dispute surrounding the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation of Mr. Jamiu Owodunni Basola.

Basola, a Civil Engineering graduate from FUTA, has been denied mobilisation for NYSC based on claims by JAMB that his admission was not properly authorised. This assertion directly contradicts confirmations from the university’s Senate, Head of Department, Dean of Students’ Affairs, and the Vice Chancellor, all of whom have verified that his admission was legitimate and properly documented.

Dr. Olaitan Adesomoju, who chairs the alumni council, expressed dismay in a statement sent to Tribune Online. He urged JAMB to clear FUTA’s name, update Basola’s status in its records, and facilitate his immediate mobilisation. The group also demanded transparent communication from JAMB with both the student and the university, including a public update on the results of investigations reportedly carried out by the police and Department of State Services (DSS).

“If this issue is not resolved within seven days, we will begin peaceful protests and escalate the matter to higher authorities,” Dr. Adesomoju warned. “We refuse to allow one of our own suffer unnecessary psychological distress due to bureaucratic failings.”

In its defense, JAMB insists that Basola’s name does not appear in its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) and therefore, his admission was not formally approved. JAMB further clarified that it does not initiate admissions but rather validates candidates recommended by accredited institutions.

FUTA has reiterated that Basola’s admission met all internal requirements and documentation was properly submitted to JAMB. The institution awaits a conclusive response from the board regarding the matter.
