FUTA Alumnus Awards ₦10 Million in Scholarships to 141 Students

Engr. Gbenga Owolabi, a Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) alumnus, awarded ₦10 million in scholarships to 141 students across various faculties, supporting both financially needy and academically outstanding undergraduates.

Engr. Gbenga Owolabi, an alumnus of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), has generously awarded ₦10 million in scholarships to 141 undergraduate students from various faculties at the institution.

The scholarships, which is part of the Renaissance Support Program, provided ₦50,000 to 500-level students and ₦20,000 to students in the 200-400 levels, benefiting both financially disadvantaged students and those with outstanding academic performance.

Initially launched during the 2018/2019 academic session for students in the Department of Physics, Engr. Owolabi has since expanded the program to include all departments. The scholarship program was designed to support students demonstrating financial need or achieving the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in their respective levels.

The awards ceremony, held on August 15, 2024, at FUTA’s Hilltop Auditorium, saw Mr. Feso Ademuwagun representing Engr. Owolabi. He emphasized the importance of giving back to FUTA, stating, “It is an honor to give back to this institute. FUTA laid a perfect foundation for me to discover my passion and unleash my potential.” He encouraged students to use the awards wisely, remain focused on their dreams, and see challenges as opportunities for growth.

The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Development, Professor Sunday Oluyamo, expressed deep appreciation for the donation, acknowledging the consistent support from FUTA alumni in the institution’s growth. She described Engr. Owolabi’s contribution as “magnanimous and laudable,” and emphasized that it would inspire the recipients to achieve greater academic success.

Professor Joseph Ojo, the event coordinator, praised Engr. Owolabi’s commitment to academic excellence, noting his dedication to supporting less privileged and academically strong students across all departments.

On behalf of the scholarship recipients, Segun Adeoye, a student from the Marine Science and Technology department, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Engr. Owolabi, pledging to strive for excellence and give back to FUTA in the future.
