Professor Matthew Ayorinde Adebayo of FUTA has been awarded the prestigious NAS Gold Medal for his groundbreaking research in water treatment and environmental chemistry, making significant contributions to science and sustainability in Nigeria.

Matthew Ayorinde Adebayo, a distinguished Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has been honored with the NAS Gold Medal by the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS).
The award, announced in a statement by the NAS Science Prize Committee chaired by Sonny Kuku and Oladoyin Okubanjo, recognizes outstanding scientific achievements with national significance and global impact. Instituted in 2016, the NAS Gold Medal alternates annually between Life and Physical Sciences. The 2024 award, focused on Physical Sciences, includes a medal, a certificate, and a monetary prize.
Professor Adebayo’s pioneering research spans materials science, water treatment, corrosion technology, and environmental chemistry. His groundbreaking studies have centered on water treatment methods such as adsorption, coagulation/flocculation, and photodegradation, using innovative and eco-friendly materials.
Adebayo’s team has developed cost-effective green materials and composites that efficiently remove organic dyes and contaminants from wastewater, making significant contributions to environmental sustainability. One notable achievement involved converting elephant grass biomass into biochars capable of effectively removing nitrate ions from water, addressing a critical public health concern.
The NAS highlighted the relevance of Adebayo’s work in providing actionable insights for industries and stakeholders, particularly on transforming biomass into adsorptive materials for wastewater remediation. His achievements will be formally celebrated on 22 January 2025 during the Sixth NAS Annual Scientific Conference in Abuja, Nigeria.
Established in 1977, the NAS is Nigeria’s foremost independent scientific institution, dedicated to advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI). It promotes the growth, dissemination, and application of scientific knowledge to address national challenges and inform policy development.
Professor Adebayo joins an elite group of Nigerian scientists recognized for their transformative contributions to the nation and the global scientific community.
