National Association of Nigerian Students, Enugu Chapter, has condemned the fatal accident at IMT, Enugu, after a student died and two were hospitalized following an accident due to reckless driving during their signing out celebration.


The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Enugu Chapter, has expressed profound grief following the tragic death of a student and the hospitalization of two others in a reckless driving incident during a signing-out celebration at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu. The fatal event occurred on September 30, 2024.
In a statement released by NANS, the association extended its condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased. The organization also praised the swift actions of the IMT Acting Rector, Dr. Chukwuezen Patrick Ejim, for his effective leadership and support during this difficult period.
NANS further acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) for their prompt intervention in maintaining order and safety following the incident. According to the statement, the driver responsible for the incident has been arrested and remains in police custody. NANS reassured the public that the Nigerian Police are pursuing due legal processes to ensure justice is served, with the association closely monitoring the case.
In response to the tragedy, NANS issued immediate directives to prevent similar incidents in the future. These include a prohibition on the use of vehicles and other reckless activities during signing-out parades across all tertiary institutions in Enugu State. The association also urged institutions to enforce speed limits on campuses and vowed to take legal action against any individuals who fail to comply with these safety regulations.
The statement concluded with a call for students to prioritize responsible behavior and adhere to the safety measures outlined. NANS reiterated its commitment to promoting a safe and conducive learning environment while addressing recklessness within schools.
