Ayale Williams: 26-Year-Old Becomes First Lawyer in Her Family After Excelling in New York Bar Exam

Ayale Williams, a 26-year-old first-generation immigrant, became the first lawyer in her family after earning her law degree from NCCU, passing the New York Bar Exam with outstanding scores, and celebrating her decade-long journey in a viral video with her mother.

A Remarkable Milestone

USA — Ayale Williams, a determined 26-year-old woman, has achieved a historic personal milestone by passing the New York Bar Exam with exceptional results, becoming the first lawyer in her family. Her accomplishment went viral after Good Morning America highlighted a heartfelt video showing her and her mother reacting to the results.

In the video, Ayale and her mother sit tensely in front of a laptop, waiting for the outcome. The moment the results appear, Ayale shouts, “I passed!” Her mother, overwhelmed with emotion, leans in to confirm the result before erupting in joyful celebration alongside her daughter.

A Mother’s Prayer and Ten Years of Grit

Ayale credited her triumph to faith, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her family—especially her mother. “This is for every praying mother,” she wrote in a social media post, honoring the role her mother played in her journey.

She earned her Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law, one of just six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) accredited by the American Bar Association. Her path to this moment took a full decade of dedication, marked by determination and sacrifice.

Academic and Professional Highlights

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Sociology & Criminal Justice — University at Albany, NY
  • Law Degree: Juris Doctor — NCCU School of Law
  • Bar Exam: Passed with a high UBE score, qualifying her to practice law across multiple jurisdictions

Now a first-generation immigrant and a first-generation attorney, Ayale says this victory is bigger than her — it represents hope and achievement for her entire community.
