Isioma Sybil Nwosu from LASU’s Biochemistry Department has emerged as the best graduating student for the 2023/2024 session with a CGPA of 4.93, as announced during the university’s 28th Convocation ceremony.


Isioma Sybil Nwosu from the Department of Biochemistry has been named the overall best-graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session, achieving an outstanding CGPA of 4.93.
The announcement was made on Thursday by LASU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, during a press briefing ahead of the university’s 28th Convocation ceremony. She expressed pride in LASU’s commitment to producing graduates who are well-prepared to make meaningful contributions at both national and global levels.
Professor Olatunji-Bello outlined the schedule of events for the Convocation, which is divided into pre-convocation and main convocation activities.
• The pre-convocation events began with a press briefing and a staff sports competition, followed by a Jumat service at the University Central Mosque on Friday, April 4, 2025. A thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, April 6, at the University Chapel of Light, Ojo.
• The main convocation events start on Monday, April 7, with a Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival at the university’s Badagry Gate.
• On Tuesday, April 8, the convocation lecture, titled “Patriots, Citizenship, and National Ownership: The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future,” will be delivered by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, with Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the chairman.
• The award of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and master’s degrees will take place on Wednesday, April 9, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium.
• The grand finale on Thursday, April 10, will feature the conferment of doctorate degrees, distinguished professorships, and honorary doctorates.
A total of 971 students will receive diploma certificates, including 123 with distinctions, 550 with upper credits, 287 with lower credits, and 11 passes. Among the 8,711 undergraduate students, 192 earned first-class honors, while 3,076 graduated with second-class upper division, 4,397 with second-class lower division, 990 with third class, and 39 with passes.
For postgraduate degrees, 2,235 students will be awarded certificates, including 302 postgraduate diplomas, 1,132 academic master’s degrees, 639 professional master’s degrees, 125 PhDs, and 37 professional doctoral degrees.
The university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, for their contributions to national development. Additionally, Professor Joseph Abayomi Olagunju will be honored as a Distinguished Professor.
Professor Olatunji-Bello also highlighted LASU’s achievements under her administration, including the full accreditation of 43 out of 44 courses presented to the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2023. She emphasized LASU’s standing as Nigeria’s best state university and its consistent ranking as the top university in Sub-Saharan Africa by the UI Greenmetrics World University Ranking for three consecutive years.
Isioma Nwosu’s remarkable academic feat reflects LASU’s commitment to academic excellence, further cementing the university’s reputation as a center for high-quality education and research.
