KASU Introduces Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Kaduna State University (KASU) celebrated a significant milestone with the commissioning and orientation of its new Bachelor’s degree program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Held on Tuesday, 5th November 2024, at the University’s 1000-seater Auditorium, the event attracted educators, students, and a representative from the National Universities Commission (NUC), marking a pioneering academic initiative in Nigeria and West Africa.

The ceremony began with an address by Dr. Nurudeen U. Miko, Head of the Department of Procurement and Supply Chain Management, who expressed gratitude to the NUC for its role in facilitating the program. He highlighted the degree’s unique position in Nigeria’s academic landscape, emphasizing its value to students and its alignment with regional educational advancements.

Following Dr. Miko’s address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Strategy, Innovation, and Service Delivery) Prof. Helen Afang Andow, praised the department’s dedication to quality education. She stressed the program’s potential to make KASU a center of excellence in Logistics and Supply Chain Management in West Africa. Prof. Andow also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and equipping students with skills to succeed in a dynamic, globalized economy, underscoring KASU’s mission to drive impactful education for national and regional development.

Representing the NUC, Dr. Esther Mmeka commended KASU’s innovative spirit and conveyed greetings from NUC Acting Executive Secretary, Mr. Chris Maiyaki, affirming the Commission’s dedication to quality higher education across Nigeria’s 274 universities.

LEARN Logistics Country Director, Mr. Stephen Akut, highlighted the program’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing its relevance to global and local challenges. Dr. Ramatu Abdulkadir provided a comprehensive overview of the BSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management curriculum, explaining how it prepares students to address complex industry issues locally and internationally. Mr. Akut also engaged students in discussions about collaboration and global thinking, stressing the dynamic nature of the sector and the importance of openness to international experiences.

The event featured industry insights from Kaduna Electric’s Mr. Sadi Magaji and Pharm. Mercy Ibrahim Boyis, who discussed real-world applications of logistics in electricity and healthcare supply chains. Dr. Obiora Madu, Director General of the Africa Centre for Supply Chain, concluded the session by highlighting diverse career paths within the field, inspiring students to explore various professional opportunities.

Prof. Tukur Abdulkadir, Dean of the Student Affairs Division, emphasized the importance of student welfare in achieving a productive academic journey and encouraged students to utilize the university’s resources and support systems. Prof. Auwal Farouk Abdussalam, Director of Academic Planning, represented by Dr. Aliyu Adamu, assured students of KASU’s dedication to academic quality, noting the critical role of academic planning in equipping students with industry-relevant skills and promoting excellence.

The event concluded with encouraging words from Prof. Seth Akutson, Director of the Entrepreneurship, Research, and Development Centre (ERDC) and a representative of the parents, urging students to approach their studies with collaboration, composure, and an open mind.

KASU’s new program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management promises to shape a generation of professionals ready to drive innovation and growth across key industries in Nigeria and beyond.

The students later embarked on a two-day industry visit to several prominent companies, including Kaduna Electricity Distribution Corporate Office in Kaduna, Sunseed Company Limited in Zaria, and Sahad Store’s Kaduna Branch. These visits offered students practical exposure to supply chain operations and logistics challenges in various sectors.
