A University of Jos student, John Azi, was kidnapped along the Jos–Kaduna highway, held for weeks amid ransom demands and conflicting reports, and was eventually released in a weak but stable condition after efforts by his family and supporters.

A student of the University of Jos, identified as John Azi, has regained his freedom after being held captive for nearly two weeks following his abduction along the Jos–Kaduna highway.
The incident occurred while he was travelling from Plateau State to Kaduna State. The Jos–Kaduna highway has become notorious for repeated cases of kidnappings and armed attacks, raising serious concerns about the safety of travelers in the area.
Reports indicate that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦30 million for his release. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to ₦10 million. His family reportedly managed to raise about ₦6 million early on, but the captors insisted on receiving the full agreed sum before letting him go.
While he was in captivity, conflicting reports about his condition circulated widely, including rumors that he had died. These claims caused panic online until the kidnappers later provided proof that he was still alive.
The university’s alumni association and concerned individuals reportedly stepped in to assist, launching fundraising efforts to help meet the ransom demand and secure his release.
His freedom was eventually confirmed through a circulating clip showing him looking weak but stable after being released around Funtua on the route toward Zaria.
As of now, the exact circumstances surrounding his release, including how the final negotiations were concluded, remain unclear.
