A Nigerian woman has stirred debate on social media after urging young graduates to boycott the NYSC scheme, arguing that many participants gain little from the programme and criticizing employers who require an NYSC certificate for employment, while her comments have sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians over whether the scheme should be reformed, retained, or scrapped altogether.

A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread reactions on social media after calling on young graduates to stop participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
In a video that has gone viral online, the woman questioned the purpose and benefits of the scheme, arguing that many graduates do not gain anything meaningful from their participation. According to her, if a large number of graduates refuse to enroll in the programme, the government may be forced to review and reform it.
She also criticized employers who make the NYSC discharge certificate a requirement for employment, describing the practice as unfair to graduates who choose not to take part in the scheme.
Expressing her opinion, she said:
“The first step to rebel in this country is by not going for NYSC. That is the first step to rebellion. You people should stop that nonsense. What are you using it for? If someone told me to go for NYSC now, I would not go. Go for what?”
The woman further argued that the programme places financial, emotional, and physical burdens on participants while offering little in return.
Her comments have reignited discussions about the relevance of NYSC, a programme established to promote national unity and integration among Nigerian graduates. While some social media users agreed with her views and called for reforms, others defended the scheme, insisting that it still plays an important role in nation-building and youth development.
The debate has added to ongoing conversations about employment requirements, youth empowerment, and whether the NYSC programme should be reformed, retained, or completely scrapped.
Reactions online remain divided, with Nigerians continuing to share different opinions about the future of the scheme.
