The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School and launched an investigation into the death of a two-year-old student, amid allegations of negligence and a cover-up by the school.

The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo following the tragic death of a two-year-old student in a reported swimming pool incident.
The child’s mother had earlier taken to social media to demand answers and justice for her daughter’s death, alleging negligence on the part of the school.
According to the mother, her daughter was in good health when she was dropped off at school but tragically did not return home alive. While the school initially claimed the child had drowned in the swimming pool, the mother alleges her daughter was electrocuted. She further accused the school of attempting to cover up the incident by placing the child’s body in the pool to make it appear as a drowning case.
This revelation has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability from concerned members of the public.
In response, the Lagos State Safety Commission, in collaboration with the Office of Education Quality Assurance and the Ministry of Education, has launched an investigation to uncover the truth behind the incident. Officials have visited the school to conduct a preliminary assessment and determine the cause of the tragic event.
A statement from the Lagos State Safety Commission read:
“While the school is presently under lock pending further investigation, the State Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and expresses its commitment to preventing future occurrences.”
Lanre Mojola, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, emphasized the importance of compliance with safety regulations, stating:
“Further information will be made available upon completion of investigations into the accident. School owners and caregivers must adhere to safety protocols to avoid such tragedies in the future.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the state government has assured the public that it will take all necessary steps to ensure justice is served.
