Lagos State has unveiled Charterhouse Lagos, a $150 million British independent school in Lekki, aimed at providing world-class education, reducing the need for Nigerians to study abroad, and strengthening the local economy.

Lagos State has taken a major step in educational development with the unveiling of Charterhouse Lagos, Nigeria’s first British independent school. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, led the inauguration of the $150 million primary school and laid the foundation for its upcoming secondary school.
Located on Ogombo Road, Lekki, Charterhouse Lagos aims to offer world-class education by integrating British academic standards with Nigerian cultural values. The institution seeks to reduce the need for Nigerian families to send their children abroad for quality education, helping to keep families together and strengthen the local economy.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the school as a transformational milestone in Lagos’ education system. He emphasized that Charterhouse Lagos, a sister institution to Charterhouse UK, blends its legacy of academic excellence with a curriculum tailored to Nigeria’s educational needs.
“This dual focus ensures that our children excel at global universities while staying deeply connected to their roots,” he stated.
He further highlighted that the establishment of Charterhouse Lagos reinforces Lagos State’s growing reputation as a hub for educational innovation and opportunity.
The unveiling ceremony attracted prominent figures, including:
• Oba Abiodun Ogunbo, Ologombo of Ogombo Kingdom
• Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development
• Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade & Investment
• Mrs. Angela Enuwa, Chairman, PUNCH Nigeria Limited
• Mrs. Wunmi Tunde-Obe, Executive Director, PUNCH Nigeria Limited
During a guided tour, attendees explored state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, a music studio, and sports amenities.
Mrs. Angela Enuwa praised the school’s high academic standards, emphasizing that its unique teaching approach will give students a competitive edge.
Mrs. Wunmi Tunde-Obe also lauded the institution, urging skeptics to visit the campus, stating:
“Once you see this place, you’ll understand why Charterhouse is a game-changer. Having this school in Lagos is truly groundbreaking.”
She further noted that Charterhouse Lagos would attract students from across Africa and beyond, generating revenue for the country.
John Todd, Director of Education at Charterhouse, described the project as the result of years of planning and collaboration between the public and private sectors.
“No Nigerian family needs to send their children abroad for quality education anymore—Charterhouse Lagos brings that opportunity right here,” he said.
With its secondary school set to open later this year, Charterhouse Lagos is positioned to reshape the educational landscape in Nigeria and West Africa.
