LASUSU marked its 35th anniversary by celebrating past achievements in student welfare, infrastructure, and advocacy, while unveiling new initiatives focused on inclusion, entrepreneurship, and leadership development.
The Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting student welfare, leadership, and inclusion as it commemorates its 35th anniversary.
Speaking at a press conference to kick off the anniversary week, LASUSU President Joldie Adebobola reflected on the union’s journey and outlined significant strides made under his administration.
“This anniversary is not just a celebration of history—it’s a call to continue serving our community with passion and purpose,” he stated.
Key Achievements
Adebobola highlighted several accomplishments, including improvements in infrastructure and student-focused initiatives:
- Construction of sitting areas in the Faculties of Education and Management Sciences
- Installation of digital screenboards throughout the campus
- Deployment of solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety
- Introduction of LASUSU Mindwave, a mental health summit
- Launch of LASUSU Freshers’ Week to welcome and orient new students
Advocacy Wins
The union has also secured financial reliefs for students:
- Reduction of NUGA participation fees from ₦10,000 to ₦1,000
- Cancellation of CBT (Computer-Based Test) fees for 200 to 400-level students
Upcoming Initiatives
Several programs are set to launch in the coming months, including:
- Ability Unleashed: A support initiative for students with disabilities
- LASUSU Trade Fair: A platform for student entrepreneurs
- LASUSU Brigade: A multifunctional unit to support ceremonial events, traffic coordination, and campus logistics
Anniversary Week Events
The week-long celebration includes:
- A keynote lecture themed “Redefining Student Leadership in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects”
- Sports Day activities to foster unity and wellbeing
- Ojude LASU, a vibrant cultural event highlighting student identity and tradition
