NYSC DG Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has encouraged corps members to use their service year for personal growth, impactful community service, and national unity, calling it a unique chance to develop leadership and leave a lasting legacy.

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on members of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream Two currently undergoing orientation in Rivers and Bayelsa states to make the most of their service year by investing their time wisely in productive, value-adding activities. During his separate visits to the NYSC orientation camps in Nonwa-Gbam Tai and Kaiama, the DG emphasized that time wasted is time lost forever and challenged corps members to pursue both personal growth and meaningful service to their host communities.
He encouraged them to identify local challenges and implement impactful community development projects that can alleviate hardship, promote progress, and leave behind enduring legacies. Brigadier General Nafiu also urged them to build bridges of unity, tolerance, and friendship across ethnic, religious, and regional lines, as a demonstration of the NYSC’s founding ideals of national integration.
Highlighting notable examples of former corps members who made remarkable contributions during their service year, the DG reminded the new inductees that the NYSC platform offers a rare opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain hands-on experience, and serve with purpose. He applauded the high level of discipline and enthusiasm exhibited so far at the camps, as reported by the state coordinators.
In Rivers State, the Coordinator, Mr. Moses Oleghe, noted that over 2,300 corps members had registered, with many actively volunteering in committees such as Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS), sanitation, media, utility, and social activities. Similarly, Mrs. Obiageli Okpalifo, Coordinator of the Bayelsa camp, reported that 1,730 corps members were sworn in by Justice I. Eradiri, and are participating actively in the camp’s structured activities.
Brigadier General Nafiu concluded by urging corps members to view their service year not just as a civic duty, but as a transformative phase of life that can shape their character, enhance their future prospects, and positively influence the communities they serve.
