Benue State University (BSU) Makurdi has restructured its Department of Mass Communication, dividing it into six distinct programs and establishing a new Faculty of Communication and Media Studies aimed at fostering specialization and professionalism. This significant development was communicated by university officials to our correspondent over the weekend.

The newly formed faculty is led by Prof (Rev Fr) Vitalis Torwel as the dean, overseeing programs such as Broadcasting, headed by Prof Michael Kombol, Development Communication, managed by Prof Andrew Ijwo, and Public Relations, with Dr Tyotom Keghku serving as the acting head.

Additionally, the faculty includes programs in Advertising, administered by Dr Maria Onyilo, Strategic Communication under the guidance of Dr Caleb Chile, and Journalism/Media Studies led by Dr Kevin Alom. Previously, these programs were part of a single department since the university’s inception in 1992.

Following the directive from Nigeria’s universities regulatory body, the National Universities Commission (NUC), several universities, including Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo; Imo State University (IMSU); Lagos State University (LASU); University of Uyo; Bayero University Kano (BUK); and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, have also upgraded their Mass Communication departments to faculties.
